Adcock Ingram renovates Leratong Maternity Ward

The MEC for health in Gauteng, Mr Hope Papo recently opened the renovated Maternity ward at the Leratong Hospital in Krugersdorp. The renovations; a successful Public Private Partnership between corporates and the Gauteng Department of Health were funded by Adcock Ingram as well as other corporate sponsors including Nedbank and AARD.

Speaking at the opening, MEC Papo highlighted the importance of partnerships that yield such positive results as the newly renovated and resourced ward, but also stressed his department’s plans and successes in addressing the infrastructure concerns in public hospitals. The maternity ward at Leratong now has a capacity of 29 beds with the necessary equipment and support staff. A new feature to the ward is the resuscitation room, a critical need for the ward.

“Adcock Ingram started in Krugersdorp over 123years ago, so it’s a fitting call to action for the company to be involved with such a project. Our mission is adding value to life and there is no better way of adding value to life than ensuring that babies are brought into the world in a dignified, safe and healthy environment” said Zolani Kunene, External Communications and CSI Manager at Adcock Ingram.

The Maternity ward at Leratong hospital gives birth to over 8000 infants every year and the renovations of the ward will a go a long way in curbing the 9% mortality rate the ward had in 2012 due to unsuitable conditions. The nursing staff at the hospital have welcomed the renovations which included a new nurse’s kitchen, acknowledging that it has made their work a lot easier and more rewarding, knowing that the babies birthed there have a better chance of survival.
